Imphal-Moreh transporters warn of indefinite blockade

IMPHAL, August 22: The Imphal-Moreh Road Transporters`™ Association has today formed a JAC and warned to impose an indefinite blockade along the Imphal-Moreh highway against the act of some miscreants

IMPHAL, August 22: The Imphal-Moreh Road Transporters`™ Association has today formed a JAC and warned to impose an indefinite blockade along the Imphal-Moreh highway against the act of some miscreants vandalising vehicles parked at their parking lot in Moreh during the August 18 violence in the border town.

The JAC which was formed during a meeting of the association held today at the Yaiskul Janmasthan parking has warned that in case its demands are not met by August 25, a bandh will be imposed from August 26.

Altogether 24 vehicles including 11 Tata DI trucks, six Tata Sumos, seven Maruti Vans which were parked at the parking were damaged during the arson, JAC joint secretary Ahanthem Dakeshwor told media persons after their meeting.

He said the cost for the damages of the 11 Tata DI Trucks have been estimated at around Rs 2 lakhs, for the six Tata Sumos it has been estimated at Rs 1.5 lakh and for the seven Maruti Vans it has been estimated at around Rs 4 lakhs.

Not only the vehicles were damaged, but the miscreants have also looted the several things including spare parts, cash and other items kept inside the vehilces of which the estimation is yet to be calculated, he continued.

According to the JAC, the demands include that those who had vandalised their vehicles should come forward and clarify through the media as to why they had attacked the parked vehicles.

The Imphal-Moreh Road Transporters`™ Association has also strongly condemned the act of vandalising the vehicles which were plying along the route under the association.

The JAC has also demanded that actions be taken up against those miscreants by the government and compensation be paid to the vehicle owners.

It has also demanded the civil society organisations based in Moreh to provide assurance that such act of vandalising their vehicles will not be repeated in the future.

Unless, our security is assured, we cannot ply along the route Dhakeshwor said, and further urged the CSOs of Moreh to pressurise the government to fulfil their demand in time.

The transporters body also expressed strong disappointment against the Assam Rifles citing that the force knows only how to harass the transporters and not how to protect them during such times of crisis.

Dhakeshwor said even as the miscreants were ransacking and damaging their parked vehicles, the AR personnel kept just watching and failed to take any action.

The AR at Khudengthabi and Tengnoupal always harass the commuters in the name of checking, but failed to come to their rescue during the August 18 violence, the transporters bemoaned.

The AR should be replaced by the BSF and there is a need to increase the strength of police personnel posted at Moreh, they demanded.

During the meeting, several of the transporters had also shared their grievances citing that the transporters become an easy target during any agitation in the State.

NSCN (IM) cadres accused of attack on Aimol village, killing resident

IMPHAL, August 22: A man was today shot dead at an Aimol Village in Chandel district allegedly by NSCN (IM) cadres however with two conflicting versions of the incident.

According to a version supported by the victim`™s family, NSCN (IM) militants numbering around 13/14 shot dead S Walunglow Aimol alias Manglun (50) of Ngairong Village and indiscriminately fired several rounds from automatic weapons besides lobbing grenades at the house of former assistant chief of Ngairong Village under Tengnoupal Police Station in Chandel District today.

Another version claims that the man was killed in a gun-fight between NSCN (IM) which signed a Peace Accord with the Centre recently and the United Kuki Liberation Front which is a signatory of the Suspension of Operation with the State and Central governments.

According to the first version, Ngairong Village which is an Aimol village was attacked by the suspected NSCN (IM) militants around 4:30 this morning.

The suspected NSCN (IM) militants fired several rounds from automatic rifles and lobbed two hand grenades inside the house of (L) Jialungphun, former assistant chief of Ngairong Village.

Apart from shattering window glasses, several bullet holes and bomb splinters marks were also seen on the walls of the house, informed sources.

Manglun`™s house is located next to Jialungphun`™s residence.

According to an unconfirmed source, one person got injured due to the attack. But when enquired about any other casualties by the media persons, the villagers and the house owner denied any other casualties in the attack.

High ranking police officers along with police personnel and Assam Rifles personnel rushed to the spot on receiving information of the incident.

Meanwhile, a police team from Tengnoupal Police station led by Officer in Charge of the Station retrieved the body for post mortem at JNIMS Imphal, informed the source.

According to S Alianchung Aimol son of the deceased former assistant village chief, the incident happened at around 4.30 early this morning when some well-armed suspected militants fired indiscriminately from all directions and lobbed two grenades through a window.

And after the militants escaped, we came to know that the militant shot dead a villager near our house, he added.

His wife S Athem Aimol said `When I woke up and went outside this morning, I saw some well-armed militants taking position outside the house.`

`Dispite one of the militant waving his hand and signaling me to run away from the house, I ran back inside the house as my husband was still sleeping.`

She also narrated that soon after he ran inside there was a burst of gunfire, and fortunately none of her family members were injured as they remained lying on the ground.

She also informed media persons that the attackers spoke Angami language.

Meanwhile, speaking to media persons, S Areng Aimol, elder brother of the victim, claimed his brother was killed by those working to declare Aimol as a Naga tribe as his brother was against the calling of Aimol as a Naga Tribe.

Today, my brother sacrificed and gave his life for the cause of the Aimol who are not a Naga tribe, he added.

At the same time a contradictory version of the incident says that cadres of the United Kuki Liberation Front had ambushed NSCN-IM cadres at Ngairong Village this morning. However, in the cross-firing between the two groups, PRO of UKLF, S Walunglow, 50, son of (L) Wannalaw of Aimol Ngairong died in the cross fire while two UKLF cadre and one NSCN IM cadres suffered injuries.

Source said that the two UKLF cadres suffered bullet injuries in their legs while the NSCN IM cadre was shot in his hand.

It is also claimed that two alleged UKLF cadres belonging to Khodamphai village and Moreh, on an Activa had injured two Aimol girls from Kombirei village on some days back at Pallel bazar.

The two were apprehended by the Kombirei Village authority and later released after being made to sign an angreement, however, the NSCN (IM) took them under their custody for further interrogation which provoked the Kuki community in and around Pallel leading to a tense situation in the area since yesterday.

The high tension drama had persisted with the people demanding the releases of the two UKLF cadres.

Following the tension, the NSCN (IM) cadres were moving to another place for their safety when the ambush occurred, according to a source.

An Unsung Nationalist

A translation by Dr. Amarjit Moirangthem

When he returned back from Manipur to Kanto in Kabow Valley, his birth place, everything had changed. His home was nowhere seen. The Burmese people had occupied the place and made their home. On enquiry he learnt that 2 years after he left his home, the British who then tooked over and ruled Burma, they had killed his father and brothers. They burned down their homes into ashes. His mother and sisters ran away and were neither found nor returned back again. The British army knew all about him, joining the INA troops and helping the Japanese who came to conquest Burma during the war in 1943. So his family was persecuted. And those families in the village who didn`™t flee during the war had got assimilated with the then Burmese society. And thereafter the new Burmese Government banned speeking of Meiteilon, not allowing the natives to speak and communicate using their mother-tongue in public. Only they spoke in their homes quitely. The restrictions could be accounted for one of the main reasons for the diminishing population of native Meiteis in Burma.
In those years he has been staying with San-U, a Burmese orphan.

Nongsaba Ningthouja, the 80 years old bluffing to Shan Yu, ` Last year, I went to Mandalay Bamon Leikai for the Pakhangba Haraoba celebration, there met some fellow meiteis from Manipur. They asked about me, and I told them all about me and my life. After listening my story , they asked me to come to Manipur. They gave assurance for welcoming me with pomp and ceremony. They would request the government for a freedom fighter pension too. I am very much eager to go to Manipur, my Motherland. I have been just waiting for your arrival.`

“Yes uncle, but what if those Indian sepoys shoot you ? “

“When I could lay my feet on my motherland, let them shoot me through my chest. My blood drench will into the soil and enrich those green floras, and my lifeless flesh will feed the hungry stomachs of the wild beasts making them healtheir . Does it matter?`

After a momentry silence, feeling remorsed over his own promise of 45 years , never to return again to his mother-land , the old Nongshaba laments,“ I feel so insolent. Let me go to Manipur.`

At the old man`s insistent tantrums, the next day San-U went and arranged a cart and then they started their journey towards Moreh. Laying down in supine, gazing his eyes over the sky full of stars twinkling around, he rememembered his past moments one after another.

“Even though I am not trained, please teach me how to trigger a gun, then after I will take care myself. Let me join the war too“, Nongshaba Mangang begging to a Captain of Major General Md Zaman Kiani , the commandent of 1st division of INA (Gandhi Brigade) who came through the Kabow valley, along with the Japanese forces.

Thinking awhile for a moment, the captain asked,“ Being a Manipuri, would you be able lead the troops from Kabow valley towards Manipur ?
`Definitely , why not? `

“Thank you, that`™s all, Jai Hind`™`™

On the Commandent Kiyani`s recommendation, he became a soldier of INA. A brief training for few days, then he led the troops and invaded through the hills, villages one after another, then finally reached Moirang in 1944.

The Indian National Tricolor Flag was hoisted at Moirang, 14 April 1944 . The INA jawans gave salute, they sang together the national song of India, Vande Matarum. Then the jawans gave the guard of honour. The moment enthralled his heart, and tears rolled out of his eyes . And the tear droplets sparkled a spectrum of colours around, hallucinating him the 7 coloured Pakhangba emblamed flag of Manipur, remined him of the past how the British bloodsheded those brave sons of Manipur. The British gave away his birth-place, Kabow Valley, which had been a territory of Manipur for more than 360 years to Burma, by forcibly signing the Treaty Of Yandaboo in 1826 . After the event Gambhir Singh, the king of Manipur died a broken heart in depression . Nongshaba thought himself , if the cat is driven out, then Manipur could regain kabow valley after 100 years. He yearns for killing a thousands of enemy British at the pull of a trigger. His heart pounding over his chest, he itched for rushing towards Imphal breaking from the parade.

The Jawans marching towards Imphal, reached Maibam Lotpa Ching (Red Hill) at Nambol. The seasonal rainfall too came much earlier before the monsoon. The Battle continued for 4 months, and necessary artillaries, ammunitions and rations didn`t arrive , the soldiers suffered great s et backs. Dbesides, the Japanese air support were lacking, the British army took more upperhand and pushed on, at last the INA troops had to retreat back.

Returning back to Moirang, after receiving Netaji`s special order of the day, he requested to the Commandent Kiyani “ Sir , I am not pulling my feet back from here. Allow me to plant the saplings of freedom, so I could help the INA when they come back here again .`™`™

The INA troops had went back in despair. But Nongsaba became a runaway. As he know was not safe in Moirang, he ran towards Mayang Imphal Konchak through the Loktak lake by a boat, and took refuged in a home of his Grand-father`s brother Lourembam Tonsana, telling them that he had come from Cachar, Assam. There he learned a secret about his family, that was when he was about 3 months old, the people came to know that his father has married a woman of the same clan from a far off place, the news reaches the King`s ear. They were outcasted and pushed off to Kwatha. But his stubborn parent decided not to stay in Manipur at all and went to settle at Kanto village in Kabow Valley. There were other Meitei villages too including Tashikhong, Sayachan, Homlin, Mwidi, Tanalan which they didn`™t choose. The Meitei people nearby the bank of Ningthi River were the descendents of those who had settled during King Kyamba`s conquest of Kabow valley in 1471, they came as soldiers to guard the valley. Some of them includes the captives of the Burmese taken during seven years devastation of Manipur. But only a few people among them were able who speak clearly native Meiteilon.

Few days later, he heard the news of the Indian Tricolor Flag being replaced by the Union Jack of British at Moirang. One after another he heard, Netaji got killed in a plane crash in Taipei , two atom bombs were exploded in Hiroshima and Nagashaki , finally Japan surrendered. The first one, broke his heart, latter torn him apart and all his hopes were crushed into dust.

Years of toil and hardship dashes into thin air. And 3 years later India got independence in 1947, Manipur too. While the people in Kabow were campaigning to request the king of Manipur to proclaim the Kabow valley as a juristion of Manipur, a sudden bolt from blue fell upon their hopes, the news of Merger Agreement came . Sardar Vallah Bhai Patel had asked the then Governor of Assam to invite Maharaja Budhachandra for a durbar at Shillong. There, at gunpoint the king was made to sign the agreement October 15, 1949 and and the authority of Manipur went to the hands of the Indian Government. The bulletin blew out in a strong wind extinguishing the flames over the evening lamps in everyone`s home across Manipur ,and ignited a volcano into their hearts.

A broken while Nongsaba making an effort to meet Hijam Irabot , the news of the two Prime Ministers Nehru of India and U Nu of Burma reaching Imphal for a meeting came acrossed. The people of Kabow were delighted again alike the beetles hovering around when the monsoon rain arrives, they were urging their desire of incorporation of Kabow valley into Manipur. Some political experts had spread that, the Indian Government would certainly acknowlege the sentiments of people of Manipur, and the two leaders of both countries will countersigned an agreement annulling the old treaty between the British and Burma, ragarding the kabow valley. then Kabow Valley will again be reincluded in Manipur.` Nongshaba`s happiness was splell no bound. He went to Imphal for acertaining the news along with some of his followers, riding in a bullockart. As no person was allowed inside the meeting premise, they were standing aside the road in Babupara under the shade of a tree, waiting for the good news.

The news then came “ the two neighbour countries settle for peace in between and the desputed valley of Kabow finally belongs to Burma .` Dated 15/10/1953.
Nongsaba punched his hand onto the trunk of tree exasperating in despair and blood spilled over the hand into the ground. The people around had tried to stop him. The discontended many people who couldn`t consoled their broken hearts, began to protest shouting, grudging resentment ,and to prevent the raising riot, the police beat the people, disbursing them.

The dispirited youths then gathered to mend their discontended hearts, raising imbroglios to a horizon of insurgency. The Indian government percieved Nongsaba Mangang as one of those who gave impetus to the raising movement and put a reward for any information related to his whereabout and a severe penalty to those who helped or give refuged to him, alike the British put rewards over Yuvraj Koireng and Thangal general. With many informers who were envious of the reward, and many who feared the penalty , the armies and the police left no place for him to hide, finally he had to turn back .
“Uncle`™`™, San U awakening Nongshaba.

Shaken up, he opened his eyes, it was getting dawn.

(A Burmese militant addressed one another as“ Thakin`™`™ meaning master.)

“Thakin, we are reaching Namphalong Market. The land across the gate is Moreh .`™`™

“ Thakin, would you like to go to Manipur along me ? Havn`t you heard about many of your comrades at Chandel Leikul refugee camp ?`
In Burmese tradition, the grown up boys have to spend in a bhuddhist monastry for some time and then on an auspicious day for novitiation, they celebrate Shinbyu- a special rite of passage . Just 5 days left before his ceremony, the military junta came to arrest San-U for standing against their military leader Ney Win. San-U escaped and ranaway . He has been underground hiding and fighting as a supporter of pro-Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi. On the occasion of Burmese new year festival Thingyan , he had come to see his good old guardian attiring in a traditional Gawbhaung shirt and a lungyi.

“Thakin, that`™s impossible. I` ll never leave my country.`™`™

Caressing his hand over his long white bears around his chin, Nongshaba says, “ It is not wise to give your life for the motherland. If you die, who will free the country ? To attain freedom, you have to run and hide. “™.

After taking a deep breath ,“ Today , my people will recieve and embrace me as a patriot. At this last moment, I am disclosing my true identity. Being borned at Kabow valley, you are struggling for a democratic Burma nation . And I have been fighting for uniting of Kabow Valley to Manipur.`™`™
Without any word, San-U just starred at him like a prey. And his eyes are filled with tears.

Nongshaba continues,“ Thakin, my brothers in Imphal will be welcoming me with granduer. And they will acknowledge me a freedom fighter with garlands around my neck. I will be getting a pension too. Bless you have a great future, may you sing your national ANTHEM aloud with pride .. Kaba Ma Kyei ( till the rnd of world, Burma`¦).`

“Thakin,`¦..!`™`™ with a heavy voice.

“When you succeed in your struggle and free your country, you must convinced your fellow Thakins , to save the remaining few Kathes in the 50 odd Kathey juwas (Meitei villages) and not let them extinct. Allow them to speak Manipuris not only at their homes, but also in public, schools, colleges, markets. I trust you will allow them to name and address themselves in their own mother tongue . Allow the Kabiyas (siblings of a meitei and other community) to enter the temples of the kathes Poonas and unite them to save their identity. Do promise me.`™`™

The guy whom they sent for the gate pass and Indian exchange came back with the Indian currency notes. Together they cried awhile and parted.
“ O mother, my beloved Mother Manipur, there is no place alike you, elsewhere in the world.`™`™ Nongshaba passed across the gate and reach Manipur. Laughing his heart, he waved his hand towards San-U , his final bade.

“Hold ! `™`™shouted some Indian sepoys.

Then they arrested him. They took all his moneys, his earnings for many years.
3 days after, the daily newspapers published “ a suspected Taliban terrorist was shot dead while trying to cross the border. One 9mm pistol, one hand grenade recovered .`™`™

His decaying corpse after remaining many days at RIMS morgue, the Imphal Municipality declared unclaimed and disposed by buring according to the islamic rituals.

KOHIMA, August 22 (NNN): The landslide at Phesama on National Highway-29 along Dimapur-Kohima-Mao (DKM) Sector has worsened over the past 48 hours and the authorities advised a complete closure of vehicular movement on this road. As per the BRO personnel working at the site, about 100m of the highway has been affected so far and they are unsure of how long it will hold up as the slide has reportedly affected a huge portion of the entire hillock.

A Manipur-bound passenger bus and a BRTF excavator were swept downhill by the force of the mudslide earlier today. The bus is estimated to have been dragged down about 200 feet below the road along the trough by afternoon. The excavator was said to be attempting a recovery on the bus before being swept down as well. However, no casualty was reported as the authorities present said the passengers of the bus were evacuated as soon as the vehicle got stuck in the middle of the sludgy road yesterday. Around 300 heavy vehicles including goods laden trucks and buses remained stranded on the highway on either sides of the landslide area.

At least 10 houses on the roadside were directly affected and occupants have been evacuated a few days ago, says a Phesama Youth Organization (PYO) leader. He said five houses were dismantled while the others stood damaged.

Phesama villagers, the landowners of the area have mobilized a strong voluntary team to assist commuters as well as in the muck-clearing operations. A temporary footpath was arranged through several paddy fields of the village for the last two days for commuters, but this is unlikely to be in use for long as the mudslide has already reached the fields as well. The villagers are said to be out surveying for another route which would be viable and safe for pedestrians.

Around 130 cadets from St. Pauls School Phesama NCC and St. Joseph`™s College NCC and NSS today joined in with Phesama villagers and volunteered in helping commuters, particularly the elderly and children to cross over from one side of the landslide to the other by carrying their luggage and aiding them along the arduous footpath. The district administration, police and the Kohima District Disaster Management Authority is also fully engaged in the operations, and a medical officer is being stationed on each side of the perimeter along with first aid tools and stretchers to tend and ferry any seriously ill patients if the need arises.

Meanwhile, BRO workers are trying to improve drainage in the debris field and cut troughs to flow down in the slide area. They are currently working with three machinery including a payloader, a dozer and an excavator. Two heavier machines are expected to join the operations by Saturday, one from Maram-Peren Road and the other from Botsa. This was informed by the BRO officer in charge of NH-29 DKM Sector who was at the site supervising the operations on Friday. He remarked that his men will continue clearing the sludge and they will continue working at night if the weather permits.

According to Phesama Village Council chairman, Vimedo Chuse, the entire area is a highly vulnerable area and several major landslides were recorded in the past dating back as early as 1962.

Holding hands till the last

By Urmila Chanam

It was so clear to me what my ageing parents needed when I took out some time for them.Until that moment, my eyes wore a dark glass that got more fogged the busier I got. They only needed love and an assurance that I cared for them. Everything else they had in abundance and could easily buy or organize. The world over, this is the only thing that parents in their ageing years cannot trade it for any amount of money. The world over, this is the only thing that their children are finding it increasingly difficult to give- their time and their love.

When I landed in Imphal, I was disheartened by my short holiday of just a week that I would spend at home, a bungalow built by father after his retirement. The few days of holiday I was entitled to in a year either went in sick leave or accumulating them to go to Imphal for a longer stay. This resulted most often in not taking the trip home when I wanted to. A lot of waiting sometimes deprives you of the real pleasure of surprise visits and spontaneous re-unions.

Our home in my father`™s leikai is a home which stands on a foundation of several loving memories. Leaving our ancestral home where my grandparents lived with their army of grandchildren, their several sons and their wives was an end to one era and witnessing the transition of our new home from one room to the several rooms was the beginning of another. The walls that were yet to be plastered and unpainted windows that did not open completely owing to the concrete sediments at the window sill to the time we had beautiful windows and lace curtains to adorn them, my parent`™s home and a visit to see that home remains my favorite holiday destination till today.

My work remains unpacked in my suitcase along with my clothes that ordinarily go to hang in the wardrobe the moment I get home. `I don`™t want to waste any time,`™ I told myself. Mother and father asked me if I had any meetings during my stay. Oh, I cannot tell you the joy I felt when I could say, `I have no work this time. I will be home all the days with you.`™

I could sense another personality take over my parents. It is almost like they chose to share a whole new set of things now that they knew I had time. This also troubled me to recollect how my own preoccupation could have blocked such precious communication in previous accounts.

I learnt that mother had some help available with her house chores and she was no more burdened with them, we had electricity almost throughout the day, that Impact TV agent in our locality never quite responded to her request for taking subscription and she wanted me to lodge a complaint. I also noticed father was not going for golf as often as he used to before.

I also found myself put on an altogether different personality in response. I switched over to different kind of accomplishments I wanted to achieve- simpler and more meaningful and it all revolved around my home.

It did not take any thinking to decide what I would be doing in the next few days-spring cleaning! I summed up the paraphernalia of buckets, mugs, wipers, Colin spray, detergent powder, wood polish, brush and broom as I set to wipetable tops, huge wooden cupboards that you find only in Manipur in Meitei households(I wonder why cupboards are so big, heavy and immovable in my community), paintings, lamps, bed posts and other pieces of furniture. The curtains and upholstery went for a wash, the carpets for drying in the sun and a lot of stuff needed to be just thrown away.

The wooden cabinets containing old books were the best break in my cleaning project as I would peep into a book every now and then and end up reading paragraphs all the while standing with a broom leaning on my knee. I also came across a very tempting product pamphlet from Oriflamewhich made me make mental notes of what I could order only to find that it was a brochure from the year 2008!

Father on seeing the commotion in the house offered to change the batteries in the wall clock that stood in the living room. Mother served rounds of tea with freshly made pakodas. My daughter`™s contribution was running around happily and putting on music for us. It was like how it used to be when I was growing up. None of us had forgotten how it had been those days.

Both my parents appear so happy and jubilant. So much information is coming forth from them about themselves. I know so much more about them in these few days than I have known in the last few years I was chasing deadlines. I have drawn so much closer to my parents.

The cleaning is all done now. My parent`™s home might have not needed it much for the onlooker`™s eye but to a daughter, the corners that need young hands to reach to clean were so visible.

As the day for me to return to my city is drawing closer, I let out a deep sigh of contentment. How wrong I was to think that seven days is too short to do anything worthwhile! In this little time, I could express to my parents, who live all by themselves, that I care for them and I would chose coming home to going anywhere else for a holiday.

KSO charges media of biasness on Moreh incident reporting

KANGPOKPI, August 21: Elucidating on the factor responsible in the violent confrontation that broke out in Moreh on August 18, the Kuki Students`™ Organization, General Headquarter, the apex student body

KANGPOKPI, August 21: Elucidating on the factor responsible in the violent confrontation that broke out in Moreh on August 18, the Kuki Students`™ Organization, General Headquarter, the apex student body of the Kukis has strongly alleged biased reporting by some electronic and the print medias in the State today.

Sasang Vaiphei, vice president of KSO (GHQ) lamented that in view of the `unfair reporting`™ witnessed in some electronic and by the print medias of the State on the Moreh violent confrontation, the Kuki students`™ apex body has felt the need to make public aware of the true nature of the incident and the factor responsible as to why violent confrontation broke out in the interest of truth and justice.

He said that the Meitei community in Moreh numbering about 400 households had been trying to hold an ILP rally at Moreh ever since the demand for ILP gathered steam in Imphal, while claiming that on knowing the `disturbing`™ plan the Hill Tribal Council (HTC) met the Meitei Council Moreh (MCM) and tried to dissuade them from carrying out the rally.

Presenting some uncertainties of the HTC about the rally the student body said that the HTC considered the rally as ill-timed since Moreh had been reeling under acute hardship as it was cut off from both sides of the Trans Asian highway for weeks by landslide and flood while adding that such rally which could lead to further agitation would place Moreh in an even more precarious situation.

KSO GHQ leader further lamented that the ILP agitation in Imphal had already taken its toll in Imphal totally paralyzing educational institutions and everyday life of its residents and the HTC did not want the same problems to affect Moreh.

In the past few months there had been articles and comments related to ILP by some Meitei associations in the media which named Kukis as foreigners and the KSO had appealed to the apex Meitei CSOs through newspapers to restrain these associations from making such insensible statements with unresponsive result which has a disturbing effect on the Kukis who started to view the ILP movement in the valley with suspicion and alienation, elucidated the KSO GHQ vice president adding that as such HTC regarded the ILP rally as ill-conceived knowing the sentiment of its people over the foreigner tag.

He also recalled that the HTC and MCM met thrice to discuss the rally issue and finally on August 17 they came into an agreement in which the MCM agreed to call off the rally.

However, the District Magistrate, in sensing trouble brewing up in Moreh, issued an orders clamping CrPC 144 in Moreh with effect from August 18, claimed Sasang Vaiphei.

Even so on August 18 at around 8:00 am the Meitei community, in total violation of the agreement between HTC and MCM unfortunately came out on the street and forcibly shut down schools and business establishments lamented Sasang Vaiphei while adding that even though the curfew was in effect the Moreh police commando, in total contravention of CrPC 144, allowed the rowdy crowd to have procession on the street instead of trying to disperse the crowd which infuriated the Kuki community.

The student body leader further claimed that when the Kuki community came out to the streets to protest they were met with stiff resistance from the police commandos.

He continued that while the protest was taking place on the street the protesters were fired upon from a nearby building and wounded four Kuki protesters namely Lalminlen Zou (23) of Ward No.7; Hougunlen (25) of Ward No.1; Lalminlen (28) and Seingam (24) of Chawangphai while adding that on seeing the wounded men the protest turned violent.

These are the facts that the media intentionally chose to ignore in their reporting by turning a blind eye to the facts tries to place the Kukis of Moreh in poor light maintained Sasang Vaiphei while adding that the medias never reported the gunfire and the casualties suffered by the Kuki community but gave repeated coverage of the woes of the Meitei community of Moreh.

KSO appeals to all communities in the State to uphold the reconciliation peace meeting, initiated by various civil society organizations on August 19 at Moreh Trade Center to maintain peace and normalcy at the border town of Moreh, Sasang Vaiphei added.

Who is a Meitei ? – Yumnam Devjit

Festival Of the Gods – Lai Harouba

Who is a Meitei ?

As a young boy I was always troubled by the question of, who am I? And like all of us from Manipur who studied outside, the problem was made worse by the constant taunts of ill mannered school/college mates; Chinky, Chinese, Nepali, Japanese, Chimpu. These were the common identity given to us. These comments made me angry and resolute to find out who I was? What was Manipur? Who are the Meiteis? School text books offered no help either, there wasn’t any mention of Manipur anywhere in history. I had to find it out on my own.

First of all let me put this straight, no matter what language we speak, what color our skin is or what religion we are. We are all Homo sapiens, one specie.

There is a theory called “out of Africa theory”. It proposes that man evolved from apes into humans (Homo sapiens) in Africa and moved from Africa to the rest of the world. These migrations were done as families or group of families. Whichever group wanted to move on, moved on and which ever wanted to stay at a place stayed and became the natives of the place. The natives of Andaman Islands the Jarawas were one of the groups who went out from Africa and they settled in the Andaman Islands. Their relative isolation has left them unchanged in features and culture from the tribes of Africa.

During this time of migration Manipur was submerged under a sea called the Tethys Sea. Due to this, Manipur never had any original out of Africa settlers. However later on as the Indian subcontinent began to push into Asia the land began to rise and the sea gradually disappeared and gave way to mountain chains, in what is now the north east India.

As habitable land began to emerge in these places, the region was claimed by 2 major groups. The Tibeto Chinese tribes coming from the north and the Thai tribes from the east. The southernmost settlements of the Tibeto Chinese tribes were the northern hills of Manipur and the western most settlements of the Thai tribes were the territories of the Khasis. Drawing a straight line through the middle of the overlapping regions of the tribes, those settling to the north of this line were Tibeto Chinese tribes and south of it were the Thai tribes.

In our quest to find the history of ourselves I and my sisters went to Kangla, when it was still under the control of the Assam rifles. No civilians were allowed in at the time. We went in with the help of an uncle who was in Manipur rifles. In there we saw the Kanglasha still in ruins, the seven ponds of the seven salai and also the place where the puya was burnt. After that we came across an old man with long beard dressed in white with his long hair tied in a knot. Sitting under a huge mango tree he was eating green mango with mint and green chili. He looked like a Maichou we read about in old meitei books, a spiritual man of vast knowledge. We went up to him and asked “pupu kangla gi matang da wari khara libi o” .My elder sister was our leader , she had lots of energy and enthusiasm in searching the history of Manipur.

Occasionally taking a bite of his mango he told us a story of how Kangla got its name and why it is the most sacred place in Manipur.

When our forefathers first came to this land, there was no Imphal valley, only a big lake. They all settled in the hills. But during this time in the whole of Imphal valley one place was dry. This dry land was kangla. The name kang meaning dry and la meaning land. Because of this reason it was regarded as the most sacred place. Whoever controlled kangla was considered to be the most powerful group in Manipur. Later on the water gradually receded and more dry land emerged and they started settling in these newly emerged dry land. The different pats, Keisam pat, Lamphel pat, Khongham pat, etc were the reminiscent of the earlier Tethys Sea.

With this new knowledge we went home satisfied and got a good scolding from our parents for wondering off on our own.

As for our forefathers more and more of them started settling in the Imphal valley and 7 different groups were formed, the seven salai namely: Mangang, Luwang, Khuman, Sarang-Leisangthem, Moirang, Kha-Nganba and Angom. Around 14000 BC, a powerful leader by the name of Pakhangba conquered all the seven salais. And name the new united groups as “Meitei”.

In simpler words Meitei was formed by the unification of Tibeto Chinese and Thai tribe of Manipur 16000 years ago. The Tibeto Chinese tribes are the tribes we now know as the Nagas and the Thai tribes are the tribes we now know as Kuki.

The very word Meitei is synonymous with unity. The identity of various tribes vanish as we try to find a single race behind it. Meitei is not a one race, diversity is the very fabric on which Meitei originates.

The story of Meitei does not end there. I have heard stories that Kabui were supposed to be the 8th salai of Meitei and that coming of Hinduism created problems in that happening.  I would argue that as of now meitei consist of 9 salai and not just 7. The two others being Bamon and Pangan. It is said that the clan Nongmeikapam were originally Muslims who were proficient in using firearms and later on got assimilated into one of the Meitei salai.

In my search I also found that Yumnam the sagei to which I belong although categorized as Mangang were not in the original Mangang salai. We were assimilated into Meitei fold later on. Earlier we were considered as Hao/non meitei. My looks support the story…. Ha ha. Meiteis originated from the fore fathers of Nagas and Kukis.

We are at a very critical juncture in the fate of Manipur. Are we going to destroy each other? Naga vs Meitei,Meitei vs Kuki, Kuki vs Naga. Or unite as one and take Manipur into the future as a symbol of what unity can achieve. Our forefathers did it 16000 years ago and resulted in Meitei. We don’t need another Pakhangba to unite us, we just need to let love guide us and crush all feelings of hatred plaguing us. Bigger problems lurk just around the corner which threatens the whole of humanity, climate change, end of oil, war, religious conflict and what not. Let’s face them together as one and secure a bright future for our next generation.

If a hand full of tribes from naga and kuki unite to form the rich and diverse culture we see in Meitei, imagine what will happen if the whole of Naga, Kuki and Meitei unite to form a ‘new race’ of people.

There would be nothing we can’t achieve.

This is the time to unite as ONE.
