Mail News Service
Imphal, Mar 6: The Congress party has won 42 seats in the 10th Assembly elections. Trinamul Congress has won seven seats while Manipur State congress Party (MSCP) has won five seats. The Naga People’s Front has won four seats.
The giant killers were Kh Joykishan of AITC who defeated People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) and former Chief Minister Radhabinod Koijam at Thangmeiband. K Shyam of LJP defeated O Joy of MPP. Mr Joy had represented Langthabal seats for seven terms.
Three ministers lost this time, DD Thaisii and L Jayentakumar of Congress and Ph Parijat of CPI.
Three women have won this time compared to one last time. Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh won Thoubal seat with the largest margin of about 15453 votes.
In the last Assembly elections the Congress won 30 seats, NCP won in five seats, CPI won in 4 seats, Manipur People’s Party (MPP) won in 5 seats, RJD won in 3 seats. National People’s Party contested in five seats and won in three seats. A total of 10 Independents won. Contrary to the hype built up by the party and the flak drawn by its ‘Naga integration’ slogan, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) could only win in four constituencies in Naga dominated 12 assembly constituencies it contested in the 10th Manipur legislative assembly.
The NPF in spite of its tall claim to win at least in eight seats, managed to secured only in four of them.
Dr Alexander Pao of the NPF won from Karong assembly constituency in Senapati district by defeating sitting MLA D.D Thaisii of the Congress. Dikho of the NPF defeated his nearest rival from the Congress P.T Arhai in Mao constituency, also in Senapati district.
In the whole Ukhrul district, the NPF could win only in one seat. Samuel Risom of the NPF opened the account for the party from Ukhrul district headquarters.
In Chandel district, ST Nunghlung brought laurel for the Naga party from the district headquarters.
Manipur unit president of the NPF G Gaingam lost to Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Gaikhangam in Nungba constituency of Tamenglong district.
It can be noted that the NPF after having had modified its nomenclature, entered Manipur and was in the fray in the 10th Manipur election by fielding 12 candidates. The United Naga Council (UNC) and other Naga frontal organisations campaigned for the party in this election.
Out of the 16 women contested, only three managed to win in the 10th Manipur legislative assembly polls.
O Landhoni Devi of the Congress, A. K Mirabhai, also from the Congress and Nemcha Kipgen of the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) have come out victorious today.
